"It’s adulterers — not gays — who are the real threat to traditional marriage
DOJ has made it clear, however, that the Legislative Branch is free to defend DOMA in upcoming hearings, which would put Speaker Boehner and his tea party bosses in the same position as the defenders of Proposition 8, California’s anti-gay constitutional amendment. The Prop 8 defenders lost in federal court last year because their “expert” witnesses’ biblical-based testimony that gay marriage should be illegal because homosexuality is a sin was deemed inadmissible in court and because they were unable to provide any evidence that same-sex marriage harms society."

A great article from the Current on the real threat to marriage . . . and it's not homos.

Ugandan Update -- David Kato
Don't worry, the activist David Kato -- whose face made the cover of the local newspaper's anti-gay issue -- has been beaten to death in his home. So you don't have to worry about him anymore. All thanks and praise to Jesus Christ's disciples from here in the US who have made Africa in general and -- Uganda in particular -- the battleground for their war on modern values. Unbelievably sad. From the NYT:
From CNN:
"Uganda seems to be on the front lines of this battle. Conservative Christian groups that espouse antigay beliefs have made great headway in the country and wield a lot of influence. Uganda’s first lady is a born-again Christian and has proposed a virginity census. At the same time, American organizations that defend gay rights have also poured money into Uganda to help the small and besieged gay community."

Protesters banned from the Smithsonian for life
An update to my earlier post on the art that was censored by the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery under pressure from the Catholic League. Two brave protesters (one wearing the removed video art on an ipad around his neck) were forcibly removed from the institution, and banned for life. The 1987 video -- a piece made by the artist while he was dying of AIDS, about the ostracized sufferers of the 1980's is hard to watch and intentionally so. See it HERE.
Monday
I've tried to lay off religion for awhile, but when they come up with this . . . god help me.
WHY? Why now? Why this topic . . . kids can overcome their gay if only they would be holier? Really? NOW? The week after the fifth suicide of a gay teen in five weeks has rocked the family and friends of an innocent American boy? Moral standards cannot be changed? Really!? From YOUR CHURCH? With YOUR HISTORY, SIR? I'm appalled. Change is essential from you, sir. "We cannot change, we will not change?" then blood is on your hands. End of story. You cannot push us down, denigrate and subject us to ridicule, make us your moral inferior and NOT EXPECT CHILDREN TO HEAR YOU. Your are, plainly, the face of evil. Sign an open letter to the church HERE, to plead with them for the healthy lives of our kids. News coverage HERE.

Michigan's Attorney General's office letting it's bigot flag fly
Nobody likes to hear negative press about his home state, and as a proud Michigander, this story may hit me harder than most, but I think anyone can see the injustice herein. Here's the skinny on this surprising story breaking this week: Andrew Shirvell, the Assistant Attorney General for the state of Michigan, has taken it upon himself to slander -- in the most heinous language -- the Student Assembly President of the University of Michigan, Chris Armstrong.
Shirvell, a supposed "professional adult" has created a blog dedicated to ruining the reputation of a bright and accomplished student. In his shrivelled little screed of a blog, Shirvell calls 21 year-old Armstrong a RADICAL HOMOSEXUAL ACTIVIST, RACIST, ELITIST, & LIAR. Ahh love. Okay, the homosexual part seems to be true, he is in fact the first student president at UofM to be openly gay. Armstrong won (a decisive victory) on a platform of reducing tuition hikes, expanding gender-neutral housing and keeping cafeterias open later to make drinking less dangerous. Shirvell hates this dude. Here is a video of the small-minded bigot's interview:
Rick and Bubba surprise no one with thier ignorant faith-fuled hatred
When this kind of blind faith-fueled hatred and misinformation hits millions of willing blood-thirsty ears, I get nervous. Should you be so moved, here are a few of the numbers for Rick and Bubba's largest sponsors -- call them and voice your feelings:

Kill the Gays Bill Explained -- Video
This is legislation born of AMERICAN CHRISTIAN MISSIONARY work and frightening leaders of the conservative movement in the US who travel to Africa and whip into a frenzy the already Draconian impulses of existing leadership in, frankly, backward societies. It should be stopped. At the very least, the US involvment must be stopped.
Fundamentalism is alive and well - or - Now who's the Army of One?
Don't Ask Don't Tell is going to be repealed. The nation's two top defense officials are seeking it's end. Heroes in our armed forces will no longer have to live lives of secrecy, and another shameful wall will come tumbling down.
“No matter how I look at the issue, I cannot escape being troubled by the fact that we have in place a policy which forces young men and women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens,”Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate Armed Services Committee. Amazing video after the leap . . .

Many letters have been sent to the Valley News concerning the homosexual menace in Vermont. I am the mother of a gay son and I've taken enough from you good people.
I'm tired of your foolish rhetoric about the "homosexual agenda" and your allegations that accepting homosexuality is the same thing as advocating sex with children. You are cruel and ignorant. You have been robbing me of the joys of motherhood ever since my children were tiny.

What year is it? or Why Notre Dame is in the dark ages.
UPDATE: The Observer Editorial team has posted a more offensive and off-mark "apology" on it's website HERE
Now I like jokes. And I like comics, and irreverent humor is a favorite, but this is beyond and way below that. This appeared in a Notre Dame student paper:
The text, in case you can't read it: "What's the easiest way to turn a fruit into a vegetable? No idea. A baseball bat."The cartoonist had posted on his blog – though it’s since been removed – his original version of the cartoon. In the original version, it shows that the punchline read, 'AIDS' instead of 'A baseball bat.' The paper, he reported, preferred 'not to make light of fatal diseases.' The Observer made a dangerously misguided decision that promoting violence was somehow superior to making fun of HIV/AIDS."
Classy, Notre Dame. I thought the youth were more enlightened. I guess they're also morons.

Trial in Malawi to begin. Love mocked. Prison Likely.
This image (thanks to towleroad) of two lovers mocked on their way to their trial pretty much says it all.
" Anyone convicted of violating the ban on homosexuality could face a prison sentence of up to 14 years. The couple's defence team argued in court Monday that their arrest on the basis of their perceived sexual orientation 'amounts to discrimination, a violation of their rights to freedom of expression, conscience and expression as enshrined in our republican constitution.'
"Our prayer is for a constitutional review of the laws in the penal code that criminalise homosexuality in the country and are inconsistent with the constitution," lawyer Noel Supedi told a packed court.
Chief resident magistrate Nyakwawa Usiwausiwa, presiding over a case that has generated widespread public debate in the country, agreed with the plea for a constitutional review but ruled the case could be moved to the constitutional court only with the consent of the chief justice."

Rick Warren lies about his massive ties to Ugandan "Kill the Gays" laws
After spreading intolerance and ignorance all over the world, supporting prop 8 in California, and encouraging condom burning in Uganda, mega-pastor (quite mega, lately) Rick Warren has spoken out against the "kill the gays" bill in that country. He denies connections to the super-secret fundamentalist Washington Christian coven "the Family", and generally tries to cover his ass. Rachel Maddow isn't allowing that.

Kill the Gays legislation in Uganda linked to American Ex-gay freakazoid
If you're unfamiliar with the proposed legislation in Uganda that makes homosexuality a death penalty crime, or with the links its proponents have to American evangelicals like Rick Warren or Richard Cohen, Read up on it HERE from towleroad.
